Summer season is on the way. We hope you are planning a vacation trip to your native or other summer resort places. The increased temperature during summer is the base reason for various health hazards arise in this season. Unlike our skin, our teeth are not exposed to the sun but our mouth is also prone to various dental complications caused by the high temperatures.

You might experience canker sores, burning sensation inside your mouth and other discomforts in summer. Am I right?

It is because of the proliferation of oral bacteria that take advantage of the minimum salivary flow (it is common in summer). Hence you have to take care of your oral health during the summer.

Take a look at the summer tips given by Dr. D.Sendhilnathan to maintain a healthy mouth in summer.

1) Stay Hydrated

Salivary flow is drastically reduced in summer. When our mouth becomes dry, bacteria present in the mouth cling and accumulate over the oral regions like gum surfaces, teeth and others.  If you want to wipe out the bacteria, you should hydrate your body to produce more saliva.

Saliva is a natural cleansing agent which is powerful to eliminate the harmful microorganisms exist in our mouth.

2) Prefer water instead of soda

Most people consume sweetened drinks, carbonated drinks, soda and others to bear the heat during summer. It also helps you to hydrate yourself. We do not deny it. But the sugar compounds, sweetening agents and other chemical products in such fluids will affect the teeth like the bacteria do and weaken the teeth enamel.

Hence Doctors recommend to drink water instead of soft drinks. Drinking water is the best way to keep yourself hydrated.

3) Use straw

Drinking fruit juices is also the right way to overcome the heat and hydrate your mouth. Excess of sugar adding in the juice is also harmful to the teeth. We do not advice not to drink fruit juices but recommend to use a straw while consuming fruit juices. This is because straws prevent the contact of sugar substances in the juice with the teeth.

4) Pack healthy snacks

During summer trips, many people prefer the snacks available in the market. Likewise, some people reserve space for sugar candies in their bag for their kids. Instead of such sugary, acidic and expensive eatables, you can prepare natural snacks like fruits and vegetable salads.

Vegetables like carrot, cucumber, fruits like watermelons and others are available excessively, You can also get different fruits at low costs during summer. Hence you can make a healthy snack for your kids and family members cost-effectively and instantly in your summer vacation trip.

5) Don’t chew ice cubes

Ice cubes – The condensed state of water and it is widely utilized to add cooling to a drink. Some people develop a habit of chewing ice. If you think chewing ice also dehydrates your body, you are not right.

The ice cubes are sturdy and hard enough to damage the teeth enamel. It is mandatory to leave this habit for the longevity of your teeth.

Conclusion

Enjoying the summer holidays or enjoying summer vacation trip does not mean to take a break from a regular oral hygiene routine. Take toothbrush, toothpaste, flossing wire and other dental hygiene accessories along with you in your trip. Likewise, if you take a bath in a swimming pool, don’t forget to brush your teeth after coming from the pool. This is because the water is chlorinated and it will infect your teeth.

We hope that the given tips will help you maintain your dental health effectively in the coming summer. If you want to share any summer dental care tips, please share it in the comment section.
