6 Home care tips to cure swollen gums
Gum swelling (or) Swollen gums is a warning sign of the underlying gums. Apart from gum diseases, various aspects like hormonal changes, malnutrition, poor fitting of dentures, irritations caused by toothpaste, medication side effects and others also cause pain, soreness and inflammation in gums.
Whatever the source of infection in gums, the infected gum tissues should be treated immediately. It is because gums play an important role in our overall health.

Natural remedies to cure swollen gums
1) Turmeric Gel
Turmeric is well-known for its medicinal values and it has recommended as a remedy for gum diseases. Turmeric and products which have turmeric as a base material have a compound called Curcumin which is a strong antioxidant and hold anti-inflammatory properties.
Hence applying turmeric or turmeric gel over the swollen gums will reduce the inflammation.
After brushing your teeth, apply turmeric gel over the gums and leave it for 10 minutes. Then swish your mouth with a cup of water. Repeat it twice a day. It will cure the gum swelling.
2) Boiled lemon juice
Lemon juice is a rich source of Vitamin C. Meanwhile, it is a powerhouse of antimicrobial compounds that can wipe out the microbes responsible for infection in the gum.
- Take one lemon and extract the juice present in it.
- Add a cup of water to dilute the lemon juice.
- Add a teaspoon of salt to the solution.
- Boil the mixture at moderate temperature to make it warm.
- Swish your mouth with this lukewarm lemon juice solution two times a day. You can quickly get rid of pain and inflammation in gums.
3) Warm and Cold Compress
Applying gentle pressure outside the mouth is a powerful remedy to alleviate pain and other discomforts caused by various dental problems. You can use ice cubes and tea bags to alleviate inflammation in gums.
- Cold compress – Wrap some ice cubes in a clean cloth or towel and hold it against your face (i.e) outside the mouth for 5 minutes. Don’t hold it directly on the gums. Repeat this frequently at regular intervals daily until the gum swelling goes away.
- Warm Compress – Steep a tea bag in warm water for a few minutes. Apply it outside the mouth. On the other hand, soak a clean cloth in warm water and squeeze it to remove the water. Hold the wet cloth against your face for minutes.

4) Clove
Clove provides a cluster of dental benefits because of the antioxidants and germicidal properties. So it has been used as a home remedy for various oral problems like bad breath, gum diseases, toothache, etc.
If you notice swelling in gums or encounter pain in gums, chew some cloves. On the other hand, apply clove oil over the swollen gums. You will see the difference quickly.
5) Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera is recommended to fix gum diseases because of its coolant properties. Take the white gel present in the aloe vera plant and rub it on your gums daily.
Otherwise, use aloe vera mouthwash. Swish your mouth thoroughly with 2 teaspoons of this mouthwash. Then spit it out and wash your mouth. Repeat this twice a day. It can fix the infected tissues in gums and reduce swelling in gums.
6) Prepare mouthwash with essential oils
Essential oils like chamomile. peppermint oil, clove oil, tea tree oil, thyme oil posses the antibacterial agents and antioxidants to kill the harmful microorganisms present in our mouth. They can prevent various dental disorders like gum diseases, bad breath and so on.
- Take 3 drops of each oil and mix them.
- Add a cup of lukewarm water to the mixture and stir it well.
- Swish your mouth with this solution two times a day.
