Gum recession is a condition mainly occurs due to aggressive brushing or bacterial infection that pulls back the gums from the teeth. Poor oral habits like smoking and factors like hormonal changes, dry mouth, diabetes also accelerate this problem.

You can restore the gum tissues to reverse the recession. This article deals with some natural remedies and in-office dental treatments to treat revive the gums.

Home Remedies

1) Turmeric Gel

Turmeric

Turmeric contains a phenolic compound called “Curcumin” which has antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. That is why dentists recommend turmeric as a medicine for mouth ulcers, oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, etc.

Turmeric is an ayurvedic medicine to treat gum diseases. Applying turmeric gel over the infected gums for a few minutes will cure gingivitis and Periodontitis that provoke gum recession.

2) Lemon

The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of lemons offer a win-win solution for certain oral problems like tooth decay, gum diseases, bad breath. Squeeze the fruit and extract its juice. Apply the fluid over the receded gums. It aids in rejuvenating the gum tissues to reverse gum pullback.

3) Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling – The Indian ancient dental technique to discharge the toxins present in our mouth. It involves swishing our mouth with a few drops of oil for around 20 minutes. This is a promising remedy to whiten our teeth and fix gum diseases.

Coconut Oil

Dentists recommend the following oils to resuscitate gums:

  • Coconut oil
  • Sesame Oil
  • Arimedadi Oil
  • Clove Oil

4) Mouth Rinse

Swishing our mouth with the saltwater solution or Hydrogen Peroxide is a common remedy for various dental ailments. It can heal tooth decay, canker sores as well as the inflamed, receded gums.

Salt water

  • Saltwater Solution Rinse – Take a cup of lukewarm water and add 3-4 teaspoon salt to it. Gargle your mouth with this solution. Repeat it 3 times a day.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide – Add hydrogen peroxide and water in 1:1 Ratio. Swish your mouth well with this solution for around 30 seconds. Repeat this process twice or thrice a week.

5) Homemade Mouthwash

The mouthwash liquids you are purchasing have some acidic compounds. They can aggregate the gum tissues and pull the gums further. Hence it is better to give a try to the following homemade mouthwashes:

  • Aloe vera mouthwash – You need to chew the white gel extracted from the aloe vera plant. On the other hand, rub the gums with this gel. It cures periodontal diseases and helps the gum rejuvenation.
  • Tea tree oil mouthwash – Add 3 drops of tea tree oil to a cup of warm water and mix it well. Swirl around your mouth with this solution for 2 -3 times a day.
  • Guava leaf mouthwash – Take some guava leaves and ground them. Add this paste to a cup of boiling water. Filter it and allow the fluid cool. Add a small amount of salt before gargling your mouth with this solution. Repeating this 2 to 3 times a day will prevent plaque build-up and gum diseases.
  • Lemongrass oil mouthwash – Combine 2 to 3 drops of this oil to a cup of water. Mouth rinsing with this solution prevents periodontal diseases which cause gum recession.

6) Green Tea

Green tea is a rich source of various medicinal compounds that benefit our dental health. We have explained it in one of our earlier posts.

Research on this beverage has shown that regular consumption of green tea soothes the infected gum tissues and helps in resurrecting the eroded gums.

Professional Treatments

You can get both surgical & non-surgical treatments to rejuvenate and fix receded gums.

  • Surgical Treatment – The surgical procedure involves placing a soft tissue graft to alleviate the recession. If the infection is deep, then gum pocket reduction surgery is necessary to prevent gums and bone loss.
  • Non-surgical Treatment – It includes procedures like teeth scaling and using antibiotics to prevent the accumulation of bacteria over the gum margins.

Gum recession occurs as an effect of bacteria accumulation over the gums that leads to gum diseases.
