Dental Crowns

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns are hollow and tooth-shaped restorative appliances. This is the optimal solution to rebuild a broken, weakened or fractured tooth by cementing over the tooth surface. Once the tooth is encapsulated with a crown, it restores the tooth’s strength, shape and brings back the natural appearance of the tooth.

Why do I need dental crowns?

Teeth crown is the feasible option to treat teeth which become brittle due to dental diseases or oral care treatments.

Will my teeth crown look apparent?

No. The dental crowns are fabricated with a color identical to the adjacent teeth. Besides tooth size and shape, we take the tooth color into account to produce crowns that match the neighboring teeth shade. Hence no one can find the tooth fixed with crowns.

In contrast, if you prefer metal crowns, then the crown will be noticeable because of the metal color.

What are the different types of teeth crowns available?

Tooth crowns can be classified with the base material used to produce the restorative appliance.

Metal Crowns – Metal crowns are highly sturdy and are manufactured with the alloy of gold, nickel and palladium.

Porcelain Crowns – Made up of tooth-colored porcelain. It is cost effective and apt for people who are allergic to metal.

Ceramic Crowns – The crown is highly durable and strong. This is made with ceramic and identical to the natural tooth color.

Porcelain bonded to the metals – It is actually the crown with metal base and porcelain over the surface.

How long will it take to fix crowns?

In general, fixing crowns require 2 dental visits.

In the first visit, the tooth going to be crowned is prepared by removing a small amount of external surface to reserve a space over the tooth for the dental cap. Then an impression is made to fabricate a crown customized for the tooth prepared. The tooth is fixed with the custom made crown in the next visit once it is produced.

Does the process hurt me?

The gum regions and tissues around the tooth are numbed with anesthesia. As the process of tooth preparation is carried out under local anesthesia, you will not encounter any pain during the treatment.

Does my tooth crown need replacement?

The dental crowns have the durability of 5 o 10 years but they eventually need to be replaced in some conditions.

The metal or porcelain material cannot decay but the underlying tooth is prone to cavities. Likewise, the restorative material is susceptible to break and cracks with the wear and tear they encounter. Replacing the existing crown is the ideal choice in such situations.

Does a crowned tooth require special care?

The tooth crowned with a dental cap does not need special care but such crowned teeth require care as the natural teeth. Brush twice a day and floss at least once a day to keep the dental cap clean.

The place where the teeth crown edge meets the gum surface should be clean because the underlying tooth decay and gums disease around the crowned teeth begin from that region.

How much does my teeth crown cost?

The cost of dental crowns changes with the material used. The cost of a tooth crown begins from ₹5500.
