Your smile is the first thing people notice about you and it is vital that you have one that brightens up the people around you. Gaps in the teeth have long been thought as a hindrance to attaining a perfect set of teeth, both aesthetically and medically.

Here in this article, let us talk about how to fill the gap between teeth and have a healthy and an aesthetic smile.

How gaps between the teeth occur?

There are a myriad of reasons why gaps occur between the teeth. Here are some possible reasons why there is a presence of gaps in teeth:

  • Gum ailment/periodontal disease
  • Tooth displacement due to an accident
  • Bad habits like thumb sucking
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Presence of a big labial frenum
  • Unaligned jaw bones in teeth
  • Bad oral habits
  • Wider/bigger jaw than average
  • Incorrect/faulty swallowing

Filling the gaps between the teeth doesn’t always mean wearing braces that are uncomfortable and cumbersome. Here are some alternatives that does not involve wearing braces:

  • Retainer: Retainers are very good alternatives to braces that can be used by people of all ages. Whilst the solution is cost-effective and retainers can be usually removed from the mouth when not needed, it takes a considerable amount of time for the gaps between the teeth to close.
  • Cosmetic bonding: Cosmetic bonding is a relatively easy and simple non-invasive procedure that is used to rectify the alignment of the faulty teeth. It usually takes only one dental visit and the entire procedure is completed within 2 hours.
  • Dental bonding: One alternative to braces that can definitely be explored when you suffer from chipped teeth/discolouration is dental bonding. Dental bonding is a cost-effective solution that can be used to fill cavities. It is also a permanent solution that is stain-resistant, but not very durable in the long run when compared to the other alternatives.
  • Teeth gap bands: Teeth gap bands can be used to close the gap when it is tiny (in the range of 3-6 mm). Results can vary from individual to individual. But it is usually understood that it takes a couple of weeks for the results to kick in.
  • Dental crowns and veneers: They are usually used to fit on the top of the teeth. They can fix a medley of functional and aesthetic issues in the teeth including the presence of gaps in teeth. Dental crowns and veneers unlike dental bonding can last a lifetime and are very durable.
  • Dental implants: Dental implants are a time tested procedure which is used to fill the gaps that are present in the teeth. They also have a very high success rate.

Consult a Dentist

If you are not sure what might work for you, consult a dentist and get his/her opinion on your medical condition and his/her suggestions on the dental filling option that is apt to you based on your treatment and budget.
