Dr. D.Sendhilnathan MDS,DNB,A middle-aged woman visited our clinic a few months ago. She stated that she was having severe pain in her teeth while chewing foods so that she had to give up her favorite cuisines for a long time. As the pain was gradually increased and became intolerable, she sought our help.
When we assessed her teeth and gums, she had some missing teeth. Her remaining teeth were also coming loose and had plaque buildup on them. She was very upset with her problematic teeth that ruined her smile aesthetics also.
Plaque is a sticky substance formed when starch and sugar in food combine with saliva and deposit on teeth surfaces around the gum margins. It is a habitat of oral bacteria and should be cleaned without delay else the oral bacteria affect the teeth and gums.
It happened to her. The microbes in plaque corrode the teeth enamel and many teeth began to detach from the gums. So we had to evaluate her mouth with panoramic scanning dental X-ray (OPG) and came to know the remaining teeth lost their bone support and hence the preservation is not possible.
So we recommended full mouth restoration with all-on-4 dental implants. The patient agreed.
The treatment began with surgically removing the existing teeth.
After a few days, we fixed 4 implants to restore the full arch of the missing teeth.
Unlike other dental restorations such as dentures, the implants embed with the jaw bone (but this process takes a few months) to provide a strong foundation similar to teeth roots. It instigates the stimulatory force with chewing as well as the natural teeth to prevent bone loss.
Once the inserted implant posts integrated with the jaw bone, we fixed a custom-made denture over the implants.
The OPG image taken after the implant treatment denotes the implants are fused with the bone and the teeth are also accommodated in their respective spaces. It means the patient would not encounter any pain or cosmetic issues with the implant teeth.
Now she is very happy with her teeth as she is no longer needs to worry about toothache while eating hard, chewy foods. During the recent checkup, she revealed that she is very satisfied with the appliance as it helped her to eat most of her favorite cuisines after many years. She added that she was very satisfied with our approach as her smile was also restored with our full mouth rehabilitation treatments.
